Royals cards from White Sox Cards

On Thursday, I got a little package in the mail from Steve of White Sox Cards. He recently had a little "Make Me Laugh" contest in which you had to come up with a caption for a photo. I came in second place and Steve was nice enough to give me a runner up prize. He asked me what I wanted (it's not too often you get to pick your prize) and I asked for some 2009 Royals. Here is what I got: a couple of Upper Deck, a Topps Heritage David DeJesus, five Topps cards, and Goudey Alex Gordon that looks nothing like Alex Gordon. Great cards and a ton of powder blue! Thank you Steve!

1993 Classic/Best, Jon Lieber

Here is a cool card that I got from Rod, of Padrographs. This is the one autograph that came in the package that he sent me in April. Out of all of the autographs that Rod has given me, this is the first one that didn't have a Padre on it.

The cool part about it is that it featured a young Jon Lieber in the Royals organization. Jon was only in A ball at the time and was still about a year away from the Majors. While Jon never pitched for the Royals, he still had a good Major League career and he made the 2001 National League All-Star team.

I only got to see Jon pitch one time and he threw a great game. It was in Chicago in 1999 while his Cubs played the Pirates. He pitched 8 innings, while scattering 5 hits, along with 1 uneared run. He walked 1 batter and struck out 9. Unfortunately for him, he got lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth and the Cubs scored in the ninth to win the game.

This card features the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Blue Rocks are still affiliated with the Royals, although they were with the Red Sox for a few years as well.

1992 Upper Deck, Kevin Bass

Here is the third and final Kevin Bass card. You can see the first here and the second here.

The first thing I noticed about this card was the awesome photograph. It is a super-nice action shot from a different angle. But after I got it signed, the super-niceness faded and I kind of fealt bad for Kevin. Or maybe I don't feel bad for him because he didn't have to do it that way. But, nonetheless, he did sign right across his crotch on this card. That is a first here on "Autographed Cards".

Here is a funny Kevin Bass story from 'Strosfest. When I was about to get my cards signed by him, some guy came up to him from the oppisite direction that the line was going and said "hey, do you remember me form 'such-and-such' event a few years ago when I was with 'so-and-so'?". Kevin had a blank look on his face and said that he remembered the event. The guy said some more things that were supposed to help Kevin to remember who the guy was, but Kevin again answered that he remembered the event. The guy finally got the hint and told him to take care. As he walked off, I heard him tell whoever he was with "yeah, that was Jimmy Wynn".

Do you realize that it has been a month and a half since I have posted a card from 1993. In that time, I have had a contest, won two contests and took second in a third, posted a picture of my dog, posted three cards from 1968, gone to the College World Series, posted a autographed card from the Royals first round draft pick, and posted seven '81 Donruss cards. That is all going to change tomorrow when I post one more 1993 card before finally starting the '94s on Saturday. I was planning on having a contest to celebrate, but because of the holiday, I will hold off on that one for a couple of days.

Here is my second and final card of John Hudek that I got Astros Fanfest. I know what you are thinking, "only two of him?". Yep, only two. I had a third minor league card of him that I could have taken with me (it was a '91 Line Drive and looked almost identical to this card). But, I was determined to find a Major League card of him. When I couldn't find one, I had forgot about the third minor league card and took off to Houston without it. You can see the first Hudek card here.

John is playing for the Birmingham Barons in this card. The Barons are still around today and they are still affiliated with the White Sox. They gained a ton of exposure in the mid '90s when Micheal Jordan played for them.

I took this card with me to Kansas City just because it was the only card that I could find of him where he wasn't an Indian. That may sound strange since everyone who collected in the '80s surely remembers him as an Indian (please do not try to tell me that you remember him as a Brave the best). But, I like to mix it up as much as possible. If you do not believe me, check out this Ron Cey post. Also, I was trying to find Brook's '87 Donruss Diamnond King card, but I came up empty-handed on that front.

1991 Studio, Brook Jacoby

Here is the second Brook Jacoby card that I got signed in Kansas City the night before the College World Series started. You just cannot go wrong with Studio. The '91 set wasn't as flashy as the '93 set. But it was slightly less senior portraity than the '92 set. The '91s and '92s are probably pretty equal. I'm just basing my judgement on the two cards that I actually have signed from those sets. At least Brook doesn't have his hand on his chin like Jeff Montgomery did.

PERSONAL: His father, Brook, Sr. played in the Cleveland and Philadelphia organizations.

CAREER: Named to A.L. All-Star team for the 2nd time 1990.

HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Golf and fishing...likes top 10 music...favorite TV show: Thirtysomething... Lakers fan.

HEROES: Rocky Bleir and Pete Rose.

They had more stuff on there for personal and career. I just included more of the odd-ball stuff, the stuff that usually isn't on the back of a baseball card.
