1992 Studio, Jeff Montgomery

#190 Jeff Montgomery

The first thing that I notice when I look at this card the is the senior photo-like pose. How cheesy. Other than that, I always liked the Studio cards. They were always a little different and had interesting facts on the back rather than stats. For instance, here's some of the stuff from this card:
Hobby is playing with gadgets...Favorite singer is Elton John; actor is Kevin Costner; movie is Top Gun; book is A Whole New Ball Game; talk show host is Johnny Carson...Pat Tabler is his closest friend in baseball...Would like to meet Elton John.
You just can't find that kind of information on a card anymore.

I got this card signed at Turkey Bowl IV, the charity flag football game, in 2003. That was the same year that Jeff was enshrined in the Royals Hall of Fame. He racked up 304 saves as a Royal, had a career high of 45 in 1993, and was a three time All Star.

The Royals got Jeff in a trade with the Reds for Van Snider. That may be the best trade in Royals history.

1991 Leaf, Brian McRae

#265 Brian McRae

To be perfectly honest, I don't know how I got this card signed. I have four cards signed by Brian and I don't know where I got each one signed at. I might have gotten one signed through the mail, but probably not. I'm pretty sure that I got one signed at Turkey Bowl IV. The other two (or three) were signed at a Royals Caravan appearance. I think that I even have a ball that I got signed at a Caravan appearance. I've seen Brian at Caravan stops as a player and as a alumni. If I had to make a guess, I would say that I got this one signed at TB4. Click on the TB4 label to see other cards that I got signed at the event and to see what it was.

This is the first Leaf card on here. I would love to get a 1990 Leaf card signed, but I have very few of them. This is the second card on here that list the position as centerfield (Brett Butler was the first).

Also, the Baseball Almanac page has this card on there for B-Mac's card and signature. The signature on that card is completely different than any of the ones that I have.

1987 Topps 9

I got this card signed at the Turkey Bowl in 2003. I got the card out of the Royal's box at the local card shop. I didn't even realize it was from the traded set until some time later. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that this card wasn't issued in the regular set. It's not like Danny was hurt in 1986 or was a rookie in '87. He pitched in over 30 games in '86 and '85. Weird.

This is the last card from 1987. I'll start '88 tomorrow and should be through it in about a week.
My favorite 1987 card that I have signed- Fleer Danny Tartabull.

1979 Topps

This may start sounding like a broken record, but see the John Mayberry post to see how I got this one (same box, same game). There's not much else to really say about this card. I will add that the Turkey Bowl's admission was canned goods.

This is the last card from the 70s and we'll be 80s bound on Tuesday when I get back from New York.

1978 Topps part 4

If you want to know how I got this autograph, just read the John Mayberry post I just added. I got this card out of the same box and signed at the same charity football game (I think).

Split does most of the Royals color commentary on TV and does some Big XII basketball games in the winter. So, you can sometimes find him at some Royals road games. I got a balled signed by him in 2006 in St. Pete at a D-Rays game.

1978 Topps part 3

I also got this card at my local card shop. The owner there has a box of former Royals that I have rummaged through many times. I got the card signed in Kansas City at Turkey Bowl IV. The Turkey Bowl was a charity football game between former Royals and radio personalities. I'm pretty sure that they no longer have the event. I went to the one in 2003 and got a lot of autographs. George Brett was supposed to be there, but his brother, Ken, died a couple of days before it. I went there for autographs, got them, and then left before the game started.
